Couch (Elytrigia repens)

Also known as 'twitch', it is a perennial rhizomatous weed which is problematic in both pastures and crops. Often goes unnoticed in pasture because the leaves look similar to perennial ryegrass.

Identification

Leaves are a dull bluish-green colour, sometimes with short sparse hairs on the upper surface. Has long (3-6mm) auricles. It is best differentiated from other grasses by its dense network of underground rhizomes.

Characteristics

Plant reserves stored in the rhizomes make it one of the fastest weeds to regrow following cultivation. It is susceptible to hard grazing and does not persist well

in pastures.
