Browntop (Agrostis capillaris)

Widespread perennial species. Remains a significant component of low fertility soils in New Zealand.

 

Identification

Hairless leaves are bluish green; ligules are short and do not come to a point, midrib is barely visible. Seed head is an open many-branched panicle with spikelets 2-3mm long.

 

Characteristics

Has poor summer growth and low ME value, hence the name 'browntop'. Dead matter will often form a thatch on the soil surface.
